BBQ Chicken Legs with Kiwi Slaw {AIP, Paleo}

BBQ and AIP may seem impossible, but this totally AIP and nightshade-free bbq sauce makes for the perfect bbq chicken legs ready for your next family cookout. Plus, as a bonus you’ll get a recipe for a fun and tangy kiwi slaw to easily add some veggies to your plate.

I was just going through my draft folder and realized I never shared this summer beauty with you. These sticky BBQ drumsticks and this sweet and tangy slaw are a perfect combo for a family meal any time of the year. Who says that BBQ flavors need to be reserved for the summer??

BBQ sauce without nightshade may seem impossible, but this bbq sauce gives your chicken legs a familiar bbq flavor and you’ll also enjoy it on all of your other summer grilled foods. Plus, these chicken legs paired with a unique sweet and sour slaw with kiwis will have everyone at the bbq coming back for more.





Roasted Garlic & Date BBQ Sauce

  • Cook Time: 35 minutes
  • Total Time: 40 minutes
  • Yield: 1 cup bbq sauce
  • Category: Condiments


  • 3 TBSP avocado oil
  • 10 cloves garlic
  • 1 small onion (chopped)
  • 2 tsp dried mixed herbs (or any combination of oregano, marjoram, rosemary & thyme)
  • 8 dates (if they are hard, soak in hot water for 5 minutes)
  • juice of one navel orange
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 TBSP ground ginger
  • 3 TBSP apple cider vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt
  • 1/4 cup water


  1. heat oil in a saucepan over low/ medium heat
  2. add garlic cloves to the oil and cook over low heat for 15-20 minutes until cloves are tender and lightly browned
  3. add chopped onion and sauté for 5 minutes 
  4. add all remaining ingredients and simmer over low heat for 8-10 minutes
  5. blend with an immersion blender until smooth



BBQ Chicken Legs

  • 8 chicken legs / drumsticks
  • 1/2 recipe of ‘roasted garlic & date bbq sauce’


  1. preheat oven to 400F/ 200C
  2. place 8 drumsticks in a gallon zip top bag and pour 1/3 – 1/2 cup BBQ sauce over the chicken. Massage the BBQ sauce over all of the chicken.
  3. line a baking sheet with parchment paper
  4. place an oven safe rack on top of the baking sheet
  5. place drumsticks on the rack
  6. bake at 400F for 15-20 minutes
  7. flip over
  8. bake another 15 minutes
  9. turn on broiler and move rack to the top – broil for 5 minutes until brown and crispy
  10. serve with more bbq sauce



Kiwi Slaw

  • Yield: 4 servings
  • Category: Salad



  • 3 cups shredded broccoli stems 
  • 1 cup shredded carrots
    (or 4 cups of store bought broccoli slaw if available)
  • 8 green onions – greens only
  • 2 finely diced kiwis


  • 2 TBSP olive oil
  • 3 TBSP apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 tsp sea salt


  1. shred broccoli stems – peel off tough outer layer and either grate or use a julienne grater
  2. shred carrots – peel and grate
  3. chop green onions & kiwi into a small dice
  4. make dressing – mix all ingredients with a whisk in a small bowl
  5. pour dressing over all ingredients and toss well
